RAKA @ Balabam

Big winter performance at Balabam! So excited to be playing on one of Londons newest world music venues! expect heavy Balkan grooves, fast melodies and a very hot venue! Leave your coat at the door and have a knees up with RAKA !
-----------------

Raka play traditional music from the Balkans. The name comes from a traditional Bulgarian dance the ‘Raka,’ full of leg kicks, clicking heels and hands held high, the unmistakable groove of a ‘Raka‘ which brings everyone to their feet. The music has a strong focus in the folk traditions of Bulgaria and Macedonia, as well as the Romani music that span far and wide across the Balkans. Raka do not play ‘fusion music’, and neither do they imitate. They bring to life a genuinely authentic repertoire wherever they are, from sweaty back rooms of North London clubs to concert halls on the banks of the Thames. They took the dance as their name as that’s what they love to do best: to move. A heart rending lament can move the body as much as a pounding Bulgarian Pravo, and in Raka they  have made space for both, and everything in between.

TalkingDRUM are a vibrant world percussion group who perform exhilarating rhythmical roots music from Africa, Brazil and Cuba.

Feel the power of the ancient vocal melodies and the heavy traditional grooves they perform, and you'll realise why this music has survived for generations. Until you've heard drumming like this up close you won't realise quite how deeply it can move you.

The band, led by Laurence Hill, have been exploring the folkloric music of Accra, Boké, Havana, Recife and Rio de Janeiro since 2011. The kpanlogo, djembe, conga, maracatu and samba music they perform all share a common musical heritage from the ancient beating heart of Africa.

The group offers a wide range of high level expertise, from breath-taking and energetic performances to authentic and engaging drumming workshops to expertly informed music lectures for all levels.
